Whether you are looking to extend your house, convert your loft or add an outbuilding, WEA Planning can advise on whether or not planning permission is needed, and what steps to take if it is.

  • Your Hammersmith and Fulham planning application may be able to be dealt with using permitted development rights, or taking advantage of the prior notification scheme.

  • We can also advise on commercial projects, including Change of Use and new build schemes. Perhaps you have been told by Hammersmith and Fulham Council that you need to apply for retrospective planning permission, or you may have even had planning permission refused.

  • Some Hammersmith planning schemes are for change of use of an existing property, rather than for new construction. We can advise you on whether or not Hammersmith change of use consent will be needed.

  • In the event of refusal, we can assist with planning appeals in Hammersmith and Fulham.

  • WEA Planning can also advise on what to do if you are served with a planning enforcement notice.

Hammersmith and Fulham Planning Advice

We can offer specialist Hammersmith and Fulham planning advice, regardless of your development type.

WEA Planning are independent planning consultants, offering planning advice in Hammersmith and Fulham. WEA Planning's director William Avery has completed a number of planning projects in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, and is able to offer planning consultancy services for residential and small to medium-sized commercial projects in the West London area.

Hammersmith and Fulham is the westernmost of the inner London boroughs, sitting between Kensington and Chelsea to the east and the London Borough of Ealing to the west.

Hammersmith and Fulham is also bordered in the north by Brent, and by Wandsworth in the south; with small lengths of border in the southwest with Richmond and then Hounslow.

Another major site being proposed for redevelopment is the Earls Court Exhibition complex, which is partly in the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The complex has seen visitor numbers fall since the opening respectively of the Excel Exhibition Centre in the Docklands in 2000, and then the O2 arena in 2007. The planned residential and commercial development has not been without its critics, especially as the new scheme will be built at very high density levels.

In the northwest corner of the borough is the Old Oak Common rail depot, which is being proposed as an interchange between Crossrail and the Highspeed Two railway line (HS2). Having initially being pencilled in as nothing other than a transfer point, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham commissioned the architect Terry Farrell to come up with a redevelopment scheme to take advantage of the strategic location this new station could offer.

A potential interchange here could also incorporate a realigned Central line station, together with the North London line branch of the Overground, together with a stop on the Great Western main line, as has already been proposed.

Redevelopment in Hammersmith and Fulham

The most major redevelopment in Hammersmith and Fulham in recent years has been the Westfield shopping complex, combined with ongoing redevelopment at the BBC in White City. Yet this redevelopment has also been a textbook lesson in how even prime sites can lay fallow for decades. The White City complex was first slated for redevelopment after it hosted the London Olympics in 1908, yet the Westfield shopping centre didn't finally open until 2010, over a century later!

Population and Demographics in Hammersmith and Fulham

In some respects, Hammersmith and Fulham has similar characteristics to the centre of any regional city, whereas in others it has institutions which are clearly world-class in nature, most notably the headquarters of the BBC. Within the centre of Hammersmith there are also a number of theatres, together with the Hammersmith Apollo, one of the U.K.'s most popular live venues, especially for comedy. The TV series "Live at the Apollo" is filmed here.

Architecturally, it would be fair to describe Hammersmith as hit and miss, although the London Ark is regarded as a fine example of organic architecture, although it needed a significant increase in internal space in order to become commercially viable for letting out.

The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham is diverse in terms of both and ethnicity and income. Residential areas around Fulham are typically characterised as being very affluent, whereas incomes are much lower around Shepherd's Bush.

However, despite this disparity, Hammersmith and Fulham still has the fourth highest average house prices in the UK, a statistic which isn't surprising given its prime location in West London.

Hammersmith and Fulham is well positioned, both for easy access to Central London and for travel in West London and beyond. Although the borough does have a small number of mainline railway stations, the underground is the most dominant form of rail transport, with Hammersmith tube station also having a large bus station integrated within the complex. Major arterial roads out of the borough include the A4 heading west and the A40 to the northwest.
