Islington is located in North London, bordered by the City of London to the south and Camden to the west. The borough includes key areas, such as Angel, Clerkenwell, Highbury, Canonbury, and Archway.

A hub for arts and culture, Islington is home to renowned venues like the Almeida Theatre, Sadler Well's, and the Islington Assembly Hall. The borough is also home to the Emirates Stadium.

Islington benefits from good transport connections, particularly the Victoria, Picadilly and Northern lines, TfL overground, national rail services and bus networks. The borough also benefits from the Elizabeth line in the south.

The borough has a number of areas facing regeneration and investment. Small commercial centres such as Upper Street are being revitalised and seeing new local businesses, whilst Finsbury Park and Archway are seeing new housing and public infrastructure projects.

The borough also has significant planning challenges and constraints. Key issues in the borough are balancing the need for residential development with the protection of commercial and office spaces, ensuring sufficient green spaces and improving public areas, protecting the borough’s historic buildings and conservation areas while accommodating new development, and improving sustainability across the borough.

The Local Plan informs the policies which guide development across the borough, this includes residential, commercial, parks and other public infrastructure. These policies are important to decide whether to approve planning applications.

The Local Plan was adopted in 2023.

The London Borough of Islington has many listed buildings and structures, locally listed buildings and structures, and 42 conservation areas.

Details of the locally listed and statutory listed heritage assets in the borough can be found online.

Article 4 Directions

Article 4 Directions enable a local authority to remove certain permitted development rights. This means that for the specified development a planning application will need to be submitted.

The borough has article 4's in place for some of the conservation areas in the borough. The borough also has article 4 directions in place for changes of use from office to residential (Class MA) in certain parts of the borough. There is an article 4 in place for change of use for retail units to other uses in certain parts of Islington. There are more details about these online
