March 2025 highlights

Planning news:

  • The Planning and Infrastructure Bill has had its second reading in the House of Commons. Read more about the proposed changes the bill will bring in our earlier blog post.

  • New Planning Portal fees are introduced, find out how this will change the cost of planning applications in our previous blog post

  • Permission granted for the Lower Thames Crossing. The tunnels will provide a much-needed additional connection between Kent and Essex.

  • New local plan for LB Barnet. The Barnet Local Plan 2021 - 2036 was adopted 4th March 2025.

  • LB Hackney have adopted a new supplementary planning document The Dalston Plan, to help guide development in Dalston. The plan has a large focus on business, nightlife and creative industries.

Other things we’ve enjoyed this month:

  • Emily attended the RTPI mock public enquiry event held at the chambers of Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The event provided a thorough insight into the process of public inquiries, with talks by planning inspectors and barristers from Six Pump Court. The talks were followed by a mock public inquiry with volunteers acting as expert witnesses and barristers and inspectors talking through the process as they re-enacted an inquiry which took place in 2023, the decision note can be found online, for a development on previous sporting ground in the MOL in Bromley. Watching the inspectors and barristers break character to explain their actions and procedure was very interesting and informative.

WEA win:

  • Planning approval for a deconversion of two flats back into a single home, as well as a rear infill extension and installation of PV solar panels in LB Islington.
